The Preparatory Meeting was held with a view to strengthening the voice of African indigenous peoples and local communities (ILC) in the international arena, to provide a forum for open exchange of and discussion among ILC representatives from all over Africa on relevant topics under the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). Specifically, the meeting provided an opportunity: - to reflect on and discuss relevant outcomes of the 9th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity
- to discuss the outcomes of the recent expert group meeting on traditional knowledge in Hyderabad
- to develop recommendations for African negotiators on how to include traditional knowledge in the International regime on ABS and
- to learn and discuss about the merits of biocultural protocols for ensuring free and prior informed consent of ILCs when traditional knowledge is being accessed.
The meeting forms part of the preparation for the African Group for the meetings WGABS 9 and Article 8j being held in Montreal, 2009.
