FORMALIZING PIC WITH ILC - EXPERIENCES ON THE GROUND
Organized by UNESCO and DEUTSCHE GESELLSCHAFT FÜR TECHNISCHE ZUSAMMENARBEIT (GTZ) GMBH
The event took stock of first experiences with formalizing prior informed consent (PIC) with indigenous and local communities (ILC) on the ground, including through the establishment of biocultural protocols as a means to formalize PIC procedures when accessing biological/genetic resources and/or related traditional knowledge of ILC. Examples from South Africa, Namibia, India and other countries were presented.
The discussion elaborated on whether such approaches could provide practical tools for the implementation of ABS provisions on the ground.
